HOLLOW-CORE SLAB SYSTEM (HCS)

Hollow core slabs are prestressed and precast concrete slab elements. The element is characterized by cores(voids) running longitudinally through hollow core slabs. G50/C42 concrete and long-line steel casting pallets are being used to manufacture the hollow core slabs as per the ASTM A416 regulations.

These slabs are commonly used to construct floors, roofs, and room partitions. For several reasons, hollow core slabs are preferable to other construction materials.

First, the slabs offer significant resistance to fire. This slab is attained by ensuring the thickness of the slabs and the insulation over the strands are sufficient.

Second, using hollow core slabs reduces the time required to complete a project. The hollow core slabs can be installed under any weather conditions. The other reason behind this observation is that these slabs are easy and convenient to install, allowing subsequent project phases to begin earlier than scheduled. Besides this, such a project will require fewer on-site workers, thus increasing the contractor's profit margin.

Third, hollow core slabs are sustainable because their structural ability remains intact for at least a century. Besides their durability, hollow core slabs are usually manufactured in a controlled environment, unlike regular concrete constructions. As a result, this slab reduces noise, waste, and harmful emissions. The presence of voids through the slabs is also beneficial in reducing the amount of concrete and other materials used to construct the slabs. Additionally, this helps reduce the slabs' weight and offers ducts that can be utilized for services such as electrical piping and plumbing.

The fourth advantage is the relatively higher efficiency of hollow core slabs. The slabs are generally long (approximately 15 meters) and have a depth of 150mm and 400mm thick, depending on the span and the superimposed loads. These hollow-core slabs allow for the maximization of room space without compromising the structural efficiency of a building. The slabs are also efficient when used as precast members to control deflection, load capacity, and a construction's span range. Also, the hollow core slabs can be arranged in a diaphragm design by reinforcing joints to attain stability. The diaphragm design facilitates the distribution of lateral forces.

Fifth, the hollow core slabs exhibit some positive qualities of concrete. For instance, they have good acoustics when assembled to create the floor and ceiling of a building. In addition, the hollo-core slab can also be utilized on such a building's partitioning walls to enhance the acoustic.
